Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the western world. There are 35,000 new cases per year in the UK, 220,000 in the US, 22,000 in Canada and 14,000 in Australia. Prostate cancer is rare in men under 50 and some men are not aware that they have this condition until they are much older.
Like most cancers there is a range of treatment available however High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, also known as HIFU appears to be increasingly the treatment most men choose. HIFU is a non-invasive procedure in which a focused beam heats and destroys cancerous tissue rapidly.
For many men with prostate cancer no treatment will be necessary but they will have to keep an eye on the cancer ensuring that it does not spread or develop into a fast-growing cancer. However when treatment is necessary, its aim is to cure or control the disease, so that it does not shorten the life expectancy of the men who have it and the impact of this disease on their everyday lives is limited.
Nevertheless, the decisions around treatment options and which to choose can be intense and emotionally draining for the individual and their family. The test results, your feelings about your diagnosis, and how the disease affects your daily life all need to be taken into consideration when deciding which treatment is best for you. Getting enough information about the disease, treatment options and the benefits and side effects of each can help you to make the best decisions.
HIFU is sometimes used to treat men with localised prostate cancer that has not spread beyond their prostate. In the UK, NICE recommends that HIFU is only used on men with localised prostate cancer if they are taking part in a high-quality clinical trial comparing HIFU with other treatments. However, in the US Prostate HIFU is not approved for use by the FDA and many prostate cancer patients within the United States and Canada have travelled overseas to get the HIFU treatment they want.
Prostate cancer cells need testosterone to grow and make more cancer cells, so if they don’t have it, the cancer should be controlled. It has long been known that high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can kill tissue through coagulative necrosis and early results demonstrated that prostate HIFU is efficient to obtain local control for low- and intermediate-risk localized prostate cancer.
Prostate HIFU is making waves as treatment for prostate cancer in particular localised prostate cancer however long-term follow-up is still needed to estimate the efficacy of Prostate Hifu in terms of specific cancer mortality.
